Support our Volunteer Dog Walkers
and Long-Time Shelter Dogs

At the Verde Valley Humane Society, our volunteer dog walkers play a crucial role in the well-being of our dogs, especially for our long-time residents waiting to be adopted. For dogs like Butch, our longest-staying shelter resident, these walks are the only routine he’s ever known.

Butch came in as a stray in October 2023 and is nearing his 3-year anniversary at the shelter—an anniversary we don’t want to celebrate. He’s been waiting longer than he should, but you’d never know it when meeting him. He’s a favorite among our volunteers, and while they enjoy spending time with him, we’d all love to see him in a forever home where he can sunbathe and chase lizards in his very own backyard.

Spending days, let alone months, in the shelter is stressful, and animals can deteriorate quickly. This is where our volunteer dog walkers play a pivotal role. While no dog should wait years for adopters, our walkers give our dogs much-needed time out of the kennel. Walks provide the dogs with exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation to take away from the stress of the shelter environment, and help give them the best chance at adoption.

On these walks, dogs get to go outside the shelter walls to sniff and explore, something fellow long-timers Scrunchie and Hercules look forward to every morning. Also approaching three years at VVHS, Scrunchie is seeking adopters who will adore both his active and affectionate sides. Hercules has been waiting nearly two years for his future home, and is an intelligent dog who will thrive with a family committed to providing enrichment and exercise.

Hercules and Scrunchie at the shelter

We are always in need of more dog walkers. If we had more volunteers on a regular basis, our dogs could spend more time outdoors on longer walks, providing more crucial time spent outside of their kennels.

Butch, Scrunchie, and Hercules don’t deserve to only know life from inside a shelter. As they wait for their forever homes, dog walkers supply a respite from the monotony of kennel life. When our long-timers get walked by volunteers, they decompress, interact with people, and learn leash manners, ultimately increasing their chances of adoption.

Don’t let another year pass for dogs like Butch. Please consider giving a monthly donation to help all our animals receive the enrichment and care they need while waiting for their forever homes.
