After 1 year 7 months…Ivy has finally found her home!
Sweet hound Ivy has finally found her forever home after waiting one year, seven months and one day at our shelter.
Ivy’s adopter, Kim, had previously had a 150 pound akita and wanted what she considered to be a medium sized dog, looking at our beautiful hounds Ivy and Charlie.
“She came right up to me, put her head on my lap, and I just thought, this is the dog I want,” said Kim. She knew Ivy was a bit shy, so she decided to visit her every day for multiple days and take her for a walk, helping them get to know each other. She added that VVHS staff was very kind and helpful, and that the volunteers will even reach out to check on Ivy.
Kim wasn’t sure what the transition would be like, since Ivy’s routine for almost two years was limited to spending most of her day in a kennel, but she said it’s been a smooth transition. Ivy is loving the comfort of her new home and likes to be tucked in at night. One day after washing blankets and putting them away, Kim noticed they were back on the couch and put them away again. She later saw Ivy go to the basket bin, take out a blanket with her teeth, bring it to the couch and look at her, asking to be tucked in!
Kim advised future adopters to have patience, suggesting that they do what she did with Ivy and visit a couple of times to start earning the dogs’ trust.
“You have to learn each other’s routines,” continued Kim. “She’s been in the shelter for so long, her routine is in a cage. That’s what she knows, and now she’s got this freedom. Give them the freedom to be who they are for a little bit and their personalities will slowly come out.”
We have many large (and medium!) sized dogs available for adoption, which can be viewed online here. Consider volunteering to help provide the dogs the exercise and attention they need to increase their chances of adoption. Find more information on volunteering here.
