New year? Volunteer!

Looking to volunteer in the new year? Volunteers play a pivotal role in providing the best possible experience for our animals.

You can choose from a few different volunteer areas suitable for varying skills, ages, and physical abilities:

  • Dog walking

  • Canine courtyard

  • Reading or playing music to the dogs

  • Cat socialization & enrichment

  • Cleaning/laundry & maintenance

  • Public outreach events

  • Fostering

  • Fundraising & administrative support

Reading or playing music for the dogs and cat socialization are options that anyone can do, while more physical volunteer roles include courtyard and dog walking. Dog walking is a crucial part in getting dogs adopted and the area where we always need volunteers the most. We tailor a list of dogs for each volunteer depending on their strength and experience.

Do you love to clean? Help us with our laundry to ensure our animals have comfortable, clean blankets and towels. Love striking up conversations? Volunteer at our community fundraisers and adoption events and talk to members of the public while showing off an adoptable animal. Want to stay at home? Fostering is a great option to provide care for an animal off-site. We need medical fosters, puppy/kitten litter fosters, and fosters for those animals unable to thrive in the shelter environment.

Volunteering not only benefits our animals but is a very rewarding experience. Many volunteers share happy tales of seeing changes for the better in timid and traumatized animals.

Volunteering also builds a sense of community with other humans! Volunteering is a great way to make lasting friendships with other animal lovers.

We’re flexible with our time commitment. If you’re able to spend just a couple hours a week with us, we can find a role that fits. Apply at the link below.

Roscoe (Edward) adopted after 8 months at VVHS

Roscoe, formerly Edward, was recently adopted after spending 8 months at VVHS! His adopters, James and Pamela, gave us an update below that makes us so happy to hear!

“We can’t believe that no one had adopted Roscoe, a small boxer mix, during the eight months that he was at your facility. We had zeroed in on him (and one other potential adoption candidate) on your online site, so we brought Oliver, a rat terrier mix who we had adopted from VVHS in 2023, with us to test their compatibility. While Roscoe and Oliver were a little stand-offish at first, they quickly warmed up to one another and had a fun time in the play area. That, and the fact that Roscoe was exuberantly friendly to us from the start, convinced us that he would be a perfect fit in our household.

“Roscoe has transitioned to home life beautifully. He was already housebroken despite his long stay at the humane society, and he has been quick to learn basic commands. He has his own bed and fluffy blanket, and he immediately made himself at home with the stuffed animals in the dogs’ toy box (which they all – including our other rat terrier mix, Herman – share). We have just bought him a warm coat for outings in the colder weather, since boxers tend to have difficulty generating sufficient body heat in the wintertime, and he actually enjoys wearing it on walks.

“He loves going out with his new “pack” and prances as he walks on his leash. Roscoe is extremely affectionate and is amazingly demonstrative with us – He has a deceptively long tongue and will give us a good face-washing while putting on his leash if we are not prepared. We were happy to give him a new forever home as a present for the holidays, and he has been a perfect Christmas present for us as well.”
