Verde Valley Humane Society 2024 Year in Review

Twenty-twenty four was a banner year for our shelter. We’d like to thank everyone who supported us. Our thanks include donors, volunteers, adopters, fosters, event participants and people who patronized our lobby store. This public support has enabled us to house and care for hundreds of animals this year. Here are some of the highlights from our year just completed.

Shelter Facts for 2024

750+ Homeless pets sheltered

700+ Pets adopted or returned to their owners

19,300+ Volunteer hours devoted to shelter animal care

Surgical Suite Established

Donors from a wide range of stations and abilities helped us established a surgical room that removed the need to transport animals to Prescott for procedures. The Lucy Malloy Memorial Surgical Suite became operational in November. Dr. Nicholas Volkman, DVM, is our resident veterinarian.

New Dog Runs

We added two long dog runs in order to get more dogs out of their kennels and into an area where they can run.

Commercial Washers and Dryers Replaced

The amount of washing and drying of blankets, towels and other items at the shelter is astounding. This Fall, we installed two-badly needed commercial capacity washers and two equally needed commercial capacity dryers.

We Never Give Up

Two long-time residents at the shelter finally found permanent homes. Ivy was at the shelter for 18 months. Jacob, our resident lobby cat, was at the shelter since late 2019. We are very pleased to see them both happy in their new homes.

A New Board of Directors

A new, seven-member, working board was announced. Maxine Belcher is President, Alice Klies is Vice President, Catherine McCan is Secretary and Treasurer, Mary Clark leads Shelter Operations, Marywave Van Deren is our legal advisor, Chris Dowell is Government Relations and Karin Burnett leads Fundraising. Read more about our board here.

Cottonwood Public Library Reading Hours

Throughout the school year, VVHS board members and staff members read animal-related stories, talked with children about animal care, and helped them make toys and blankets for the animals at the shelter.

Yavapai College Wine & Wags

In August, the shelter took part in the first annual Yavapai College Wine & Wags Fest, where the public was invited to bring their dog and enjoy live music and local wines. We have great hopes that this event could grow into an important fundraiser for the shelter.

2nd Annual Golf Tournament

Agave Highlands Golf Course at Verde Santa Fe was the site for this year’s event. Seventy-five participants enjoyed a pleasant Fall day on the links and helped raise more than $15,000 for the shelter.

Walking on Main & Cottonwood Christmas Parade

VVHS participated again in one of the largest street events in the Verde Valley. An information booth handed out magnetic car decals and adoption information. Our float in the 2024 Holiday Parade focused on Pets for Patriots, a program that matches animals with veterans who benefit from the companionship and therapy that come with pet ownership. Staff, board members, and volunteers walked dogs and handed out candy to onlookers.

Promotional Partners List Grows

We have a growing number of local businesses offering to be the site of pet adoption and fundraising events. It seems the humans were not the only ones to enjoy the offerings at the Human Bean coffee shop on 89A in Cottonwood. Black Jack enjoys his pup cup while waiting for adopters!

In July, VVHS participated in the grand-reopening of Olsen’s Grain store in Clarkdale. This well-known farm, ranch and pet supply store provided an excellent opportunity to promote adoptions and donations. A rolling cat cart provided lots of entertainment to the visiting public.

Two promotional partners have really increased support for the shelter. Papa Murphy’s Pizza and Petsense pet supply, both of Cottonwood, are regular sponsors through donation days and regular events at their places of business. We hope you can support these generous promotional partners.

GivingTuesday a Huge Success

Started in part by the United Nations in 2012, GivingTuesday has become a huge fundraising day for charities around the world. This was our second year to participate in this event which is always the Tuesday after America’s Thanksgiving. With substantial email and social media support, our efforts resulted in a dollar amount five times that raised in 2023. Thank you, donors!

Dental Equipment Grant

The Arizona Community Foundation generously awarded the shelter a $5,000 grant for dental equipment. We are still seeking donations for our dental equipment which can be made here.

Start off the new year as a volunteer and/or foster!

We are always in need of volunteers and fosters! Apply to volunteer here and to foster here to help the animals in need of your community.

Annual Polar Plunge

Calling all Verde Santa Fe residents to participate in our annual Polar Plunge fundraising event on Saturday, January 11th!

Hot chocolate, coffee, tea and donuts will be provided.

This event is open to residents of Verde Santa Fe. Plungers will raise money through pledges and by plunging into the frigid waters of the VSF Clubhouse pool!

VSF residents can sign up to plunge here (opens in a new tab).

Meet our featured pet to adopt, Bagel!

Bagel has spent over 400 days at the shelter..she sure hopes someone has adopting her on their New Year’s resolution list!

Our little boxer youngster weighs in at only 35 lbs. She’s an affectionate, playful doll but does take time to trust new people. Slow and steady is the way into Bagel’s heart and we’re looking for adopters with the patience and desire to bond at Bagel’s pace.

Bagel enjoys playing and hanging around polite dogs and is ready to meet any potential doggie siblings. She is not comfortable around children – teenagers and older to start with please. If this cutie  sounds like your match, please give us a call. 928-634-7387!
