Our lobby cat has a new home!

Our former lobby cat Jacob was recently adopted by our Board President, Maxine Belcher!

Jacob was transferred into VVHS in May of 2019 from Maricopa County Animal Shelter and soon became very depressed while being kenneled. Previous shelter management decided to make Jacob a free roaming inside cat at the shelter to reduce his stress and make his stay with us as comfortable as possible. He did great, greeting staff and volunteers while helping staff determine if dogs were cat friendly or not. Jacob recently started chewing on wiring, and after trying many solutions management decided he needed to be in a home. Jacob spent 6 years at the shelter before being adopted by Maxine in October.

Maxine shared how Jacob would always greet her and other volunteers when signing in, purring and asking to be cuddled. After hearing that he was to be put up for adoption, she asked her daughter if they should adopt Jacob, who encouraged her with her simple response: “do it.”

“He just wants love,” said Maxine. “He just wants to be petted. He’s a fantastic cat.”

Jacob is still getting accustomed to his new doggie sibling Teddy, but he’s interacted with dogs of all shapes and sizes while wandering the shelter lobby. Maxine said that Jacob is so used to being alone that he has such an easy going nature and nothing fazes him.

Jacob has been busy keeping Maxine’s mother company while she’s visiting, sleeping with her every night and following her throughout the house.

“I’m really happy,” said Maxine. “I’m glad to have him. He’s a lovely cat.”

Join Us This December 3rd for GivingTuesday to Double Your Impact for Verde Valley Humane Society!

GivingTuesday, created in 2012, began as a simple idea: a day encouraging people to do good. Over the past 11 years, it has grown into a global movement inspiring millions to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. This year’s day of giving falls on Tuesday, December 3rd.

We are thrilled to announce a matching grant of $2,500 from the Gisene and Kristine Crandall Foundation! Kristine honors the legacy of her late mother, Gesine Crandall, who immigrated from Germany in 1961 and dedicated her life to animal welfare as a founding board member and treasurer of the Aspen Animal Shelter. Gesine’s love of nature and her commitment to helping animals continue to inspire Kristine’s philanthropy. Kristine, a proud adopter of one of our shelter cats, is passionate about supporting Verde Valley Humane Society and helping us care for our residents.

On GivingTuesday, your generosity will go twice as far! Every dollar donated will be matched, up to $2,500, and will directly benefit our kennel renovation fund. These essential updates will:

  • Replace our aging guillotine dog doors for the safety and comfort of our animals.

  • Install a courtyard gate, allowing multiple dogs to enjoy outdoor playtime safely and simultaneously.

Your contribution will make a lasting impact on the lives of the animals we serve. Together, we can create a safer, more comfortable space for our furry residents while honoring the incredible legacy of the Crandall family.

Thank you for your generosity and support. Every act of kindness counts!

Join us at the Cottonwood Christmas Parade!

We are honoring our Pets for Patriots program with our float for the City of Cottonwood’s 70th Annual Christmas Parade on December 7th! This year’s parade theme is “An Aloha Christmas” in honor of the lives affected by Pearl Harbor.

The Pets for Patriots program connects hard-to-place shelter pets with veterans and military families, giving these animals a loving home and providing our heroes with the companionship they deserve. Adopting a pet can bring countless benefits, especially for those transitioning back to civilian life or adjusting to retirement. Pets offer unconditional love, emotional support, and even a sense of stability during times of change.

Cheer on our pets and veterans at the parade on Saturday, December 7th at 11:00 a.m. starting at the Verde Valley Fairgrounds.

Our Surgical Room now operational, seeking donations for dental equipment

The Board of Directors and shelter manager Melanie Lucas would like to thank all the donors who made our new surgical room possible. The first procedures were performed November 14th in the Lucy Malloy Memorial Surgical Suite. Dr. Nicholas Volkman, semi-retired VMD, performed microchip implantation and neutering procedures. Dr. Volkman will be performing numerous procedures that used to require transporting the animals to Prescott or Phoenix, thus saving considerable expense and stress on the animals. The surgical suite is dedicated to VVHS shelter animals only.

The financial support from the community for the surgical suite was quite gratifying. An additional $9,000 must be raised for dental equipment to complete the suite’s full complement of equipment. If you would like to donate toward the purchase of the dental equipment, go to verdevalleyhumane.org/dental-equipment/. Thank you for your continued support in the care of our animals!

Meet our featured pet to adopt, Charlie!

Charlie is a gorgeous guy who loves to sniff! This hound is affectionate and likes to go for walks. Power walking is not his style, bushes need to be investigated. Charlie weighs around 60 lbs and is looking for active adopters who understand his awesome hound personality. Charlie also enjoys playing with other fun dogs. To meet this handsome hound, call us at 928-634-7387.

Winter greetings from our Lovable Longtimers

Our lovable longtimers are here to remind you that they’ve all been patiently waiting for their forever adopters for over one year! BooBear and Bagel have unfortunately just celebrated their one year anniversary with us, adding them to our list of lovable longtimers alongside Butch, Baldor, Charlie, Degas, Shawnee, and Sir Duke.

We know their adopters are out there and we can’t wait to match you up with one of these sweet dogs. Give us a call to make an appointment to meet our long term residents, 928-634-7387. They’ve been waiting so patiently to meet you!
